Summer has brought some very exciting visitors to our nearby parks— cicadas! ☀️🪲 During recent park visits, our K2 and K3 children have become enthusiastic cicada detectives, searching carefully around the trees for living cicadas and the empty exoskeletons they leave behind. What might seem like a small summer discovery has quickly become a wonderful opportunity for curiosity, observation, and child-led learning.
夏になり、近くの公園には子どもたちをワクワクさせる生き物、セミがたくさん姿を見せています！☀️🪲 最近の公園遊びでは、K2・K3の子どもたちがすっかり「セミ探偵」に。木の周りをじっくり探しながら、生きているセミや、木に残されたセミの抜け殻を次々と発見しています。夏ならではの小さな発見が、子どもたちの好奇心や観察、そして主体的な学びへと自然に広がっています。
Each new discovery brings plenty of excitement! 🔍 The children look closely at the cicadas and their shells, gently hold what they find, compare their shapes and textures, and eagerly show their discoveries to friends and teachers. One child’s excited “I found one!” often sends everyone searching nearby, and before long, the children are exchanging observations, ideas, and questions about what they have found.
新しい発見があるたびに、子どもたちは大興奮！🔍 セミや抜け殻を間近で観察したり、見つけたものを優しく手に取ったり、形や感触を比べたりしながら、お友だちや先生に嬉しそうに見せています。一人の「見つけた！」という声をきっかけに、周りの子どもたちも一斉に探索をスタート。気づいたことを伝え合ったり、「これは何だろう？」と考えたりしながら、自然と会話や疑問が広がっていきます。
Finding cicada shells also gives the children a fascinating glimpse into the cicada life cycle. 🌳 Cicada nymphs spend their early lives underground before emerging, climbing onto trees and other surfaces, and shedding their exoskeletons as they become winged adults. Seeing both cicadas and the shells they leave behind makes this process something the children can actually observe in the world around them, rather than simply learning about it from a book.
セミの抜け殻は、子どもたちがセミのライフサイクルについて考えるきっかけにもなっています。🌳 セミの幼虫は地中で過ごした後、地上へ出て木などに登り、殻を脱いで羽のある成虫へと成長します。実際のセミと木に残された抜け殻の両方を自分たちの目で見ることで、本の中だけではなく、身近な自然の中で生き物の成長や変化を感じることができます。
For K2, these summer discoveries connect beautifully with our current Unit of Inquiry, “We use our bodies to learn about the world around us.” 👀👂✋ The children are doing exactly that as they explore the park. They use their eyes to search carefully along the trees, their ears to listen for the unmistakable calls of cicadas, and their sense of touch to investigate the shape and texture of the shells they find. Their own bodies become tools for discovering and understanding the world around them.
K2の子どもたちにとって、今回の発見は現在取り組んでいるUnit of Inquiry、「私たちは体を使って身の回りの世界について学ぶ」というテーマとぴったりつながっています。👀👂✋ 木の幹をじっくり探すために目を使い、セミの大きな鳴き声を見つける手がかりとして耳を使い、抜け殻の形や感触を確かめるために手で触れてみる。子どもたちは実際の体験を通して、自分の体や感覚が身の回りの世界を知るための大切な道具になることを学んでいます。
For K3, our cicada discoveries have been a lovely continuation of their recently completed Unit of Inquiry, “We share the planet with other living things.” 🌏🌱 Observing insects right in our own neighbourhood allows the children to reconnect with their learning about living things, habitats, change, and life cycles. It is also a wonderful reminder that even in the middle of a busy city like Tokyo, we share our environment with many fascinating creatures.
K3の子どもたちにとっては、先日終了したUnit of Inquiry、「私たちはほかの生き物と地球を共有している」での学びをさらに深める素敵な機会となっています。🌏🌱 身近な公園で実際に昆虫を観察することで、これまで学んできた生き物、生息環境、変化、ライフサイクルについて、実体験と結びつけながら振り返ることができました。東京のような大きな街の中でも、私たちのすぐそばにはたくさんの生き物が暮らし、同じ環境を共有していることを感じられる経験となっています。
Most importantly, the children’s own excitement is driving the learning. 💚 Every cicada found can lead to another observation, another conversation, or another question. Experiences like these remind us that meaningful inquiry does not always begin with a planned classroom activity—sometimes it begins with a tiny shell on a tree, an interesting sound from above, and a child who stops to wonder, “What is this?”
そして何より大切なのは、子どもたち自身の「知りたい！」「もっと見つけたい！」という気持ちが学びを動かしていることです。💚 セミや抜け殻を一つ見つけるたびに、新しい観察や会話、そして次の疑問が生まれます。豊かな探究は、必ずしも教室で準備された活動から始まるとは限りません。木に残された小さな抜け殻、頭上から聞こえてくる不思議な鳴き声、そして子どもの**「これ、何だろう？」**という気づきから、大きな学びへとつながっていくことがあります。
